Navigating through the islets as the Yaghans, natives of Tierra del Fuego, used to do; finding archaeological remains and immersing ourselves in the history of the region is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive activities we will do. Moving around the area inhabited by cormorants, sea lions, penguins and even king crabs is a fantastic complement. It is an activity that does not require much effort and yet offers a great reward.

Carbajal Valley

Aboard a LAND ROVER DEFENDER, we leave from your hotel to drive the National Route N°3 and enter the imposing Andes mountain range, where the Mount Olivia and the Mount Cinco Hermanos reveal themselves before us.

Our first stop is the viewpoint of the amazing Carbajal valley, where we discover the oldest traces of the ice age and the ecosystem originated after it: mountains with dramatic shapes, small glaciers, perpetual snow, peat bogs and forest; an introduction to the geography of the fantastic Tierra del Fuego.

Highlights on the way

Together with our guide, an expert of the area, we stop at various viewpoints along the way. This way we distinguish the Tierra Mayor Valley, Mount Bonete, Mount Alvear and cirque glaciers in the area.

Afterwards, we drive across the Cerro Castor ski center, which is recognized worldwide for its activities related to winter sports: alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and ice skating.

Route “J” to Puerto Almanza

Driving the Route “J” we enter the Fuegian forest that leads us to Puerto Almanza. This unique site, with private houses that have animal farms and vegetable gardens, is a small settlement where the most skilled artisanal fishermen live. They work fishing king crabs, fishes, mussels, and other sea fishes from the Beagle Channel. From here you can also see the other side of the channel, the town of Puerto Williams in Navarino Island, Chile.

Paddle between two oceans

As well as natives of the region used to do, we get on our canoe to navigate the waters of the Beagle Channel. This journey takes around 7 kilometers that allows us to enter a wonderful and calm environment, where the waters of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans meet.

Traditional lunch!

After we finish the activity with the canoe, we head to a typical restaurant in Puerto Almanza to immerse ourselves in the magic of the place created by the fishermen. We delight ourselves with a tasty traditional lunch of fish and seafood fresh from the channel!

With a full belly, a happy heart and renewed energy we say goodbye to the wonderful landscape to start our return to Ushuaia.
